Message From the Dean

MESSAGE FROM DEAN GUY GENDRON

I am very proud to be dean of one of the country’s top engineering schools, especially at this exciting stage in its growth and development.

Calgary, Alberta, is a major Canadian economic hub, and the engineering strengths of this city play a significant role in the region’s character. Being located in the engineering capital of Canada, we take our responsibility very seriously.

At the Schulich School of Engineering, we prepare the best possible graduates – not just for Calgary, but to be engineering leaders worldwide.

We also actively engage in research partnerships with industry. The partnerships include very strong relationships with Calgary-based companies, as well as national and international partnerships, all with global impact.

We are a research-intensive engineering school. In this environment, we are tasked with educating engineering leaders and conducting engineering research in a world that is actively evolving. This challenges us to have a long-term vision as well as to demonstrate a nimble responsiveness to emerging needs.

As a result, we invest in the people and projects to both tackle immediate large-scale problems, and lead with courage and commitment into a future we cannot fully anticipate. This is where an engineering school can be a game changer.

I am delighted to see the Schulich School of Engineering invest in students in unprecedented ways. We aim to increase student pride and success even more. Over the coming years, that investment will take a special look at graduate education improvements, as these students are a big part of our innovation capacity. And we will look at research teams and their successes to see how we can increase their impact.

It is an exciting time at the University of Calgary. As we are moving into 2012, we will shape a new planning cycle, and align the school’s strategy with the University of Calgary’s ambitious goals.

Whether you are interested in education, research or simply being a part of our community, I look forward to hearing from you. I want to know how you think we can make the Schulich School of Engineering one of the very best in North America.

My door is always open. Thank you for warmly welcoming me to Alberta.

Dr. Guy Gendron, PEng
Dean, Schulich School of Engineering

Guy Gendron joined the University of Calgary as dean of the Schulich School of Engineering on July 11, 2011.

Prior to coming to Calgary, Guy was the dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Laval University for four years and associate dean prior to that. He has been a professor of structural mechanics since 1995 and has several years of experience working in the private sector. He received his BSc and MSc degrees in civil engineering from Laval University and his PhD from Virginia Tech in 1991.

During his time at Laval, he was recognized for introducing many teaching innovations and increasing the recruitment of top faculty during a time of considerable financial restraint. His solution-oriented and inclusive leadership style is known to create high-achieving teams in an open and communicative environment.

Guy has a track record of building strong teams in large, complex organizations, and helping those teams innovate to achieve strategic goals. Under his leadership, the Schulich School of Engineering is moving into a new stage of growth and development, with the largest capital campaign underway in its history.
