Researchers have identified a better method of using silver to treat infected wounds

Healing difficult wounds is often a challenge, due, in large part, to the bacterial biofilms that frequently thrive in wounds. Biofilms are far more resistant to antibiotics than bacteria, but certain silver preparations appear to improve antibiotic efficacy against wound infections according to a study by Victoria Kostenko, and Robert J. Martinuzzi.

The University of Calgary’s entry to next year’s Solar Decathlon competition received the blessing of the Piikani Nation on Wednesday, in a special ceremony in the Faculty of Environmental Design’s Kasian Gallery. The team was honoured to host Chief Reggie Crowshoe for the ceremony that marked an important step forward for the future of the project.

Experts in the Applied Snow and Avalanche Research Group have discovered that infrared camera technology gives glimpses of the temperatures of the intricate layers in the snowpack for the first time. This is providing new clues that could lead to better prediction of deadly avalanches.

Each year the Schulich School of Engineering recognizes industry contributions to the school and the field of engineering with the presentation of the Dean’s Award for Corporate Leadership and the Canadian Engineering Leader Award. This year's winners are Lafarge Canada and Frank King. The awards were presented on Dec. 2 at the Dean's Holiday Reception.

Tours of the city to see holiday light displays are a ritual for many families, and this year the Light Up The World Foundation hopes to make it onto the list of must-see locatons. Alberta drivers were recently put to the test with a survey developed at the Schulich School of Engineering. The results are dismal: nearly 89 percent of respondents failed the test.
