The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering would like to congratulate the following faculty members who were recognized by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) at the 22nd Annual Summit Awards gala in Edmonton on April 19, 2012.

Women in Engineering and Geoscience Champion Award – Josephine Hill, Zandmer/Canada Research Chair in Hydrogen and Catalysis in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Schulich School Outstanding Researcher Award
Dr. Brij Maini
Dr. Maini has published many peer-reviewed papers, and he is well known and respected throughout the energy industry for his research involving enhanced oil recovery and new recovery techniques. Dr. Maini also won the Departmental Researcher Award of Excellence and was chosen from the five department winners as the overall Schulich School outstanding researcher.

The Canada Foundation For Innovation (CFI) Award-Dr. U. Sundararaj

Dr. U. Sundararaj, Head of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department, wins The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) award under the Leader's Opportunity Fund projects. The award of $222,920 is for research on Characterization for Highly Conductive Polymer Blends/Nanocomposites and Heavy Oils.

Killam Research and Teaching Awards

The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering's Alex De Visscher and Arin Sen, were honoured for their exemplary contributions at the Killam Research and Teaching Awards ceremony on Oct. 4. A total of 6 awards were given univeristy-wide, with the department willing 2 of them.

Dr. De Visscher was honoured with the Killam Emerging Research Leader Award for his outstanding research achievements rooted in chemical and environmental engineering—which has expanded to include aspects of ecology, atmospheric sciences and chemistry.

Researchers discovered that a specific form of a protein that varies in amount with location in blood vessels. The discovery was made using a device that provides artificial blood flow to cells that line the arteries.

Turning bio-waste into fuel

For the past three years, Dr. Nader Mahinpey's team has been toiling away in the basement of the University of Calgary finding better ways to convert organic waste into biofuel. The researchers are also finding ways to turn the waste byproducts of biofuel conversion into useful chemicals and products such as fertilizer.
