Living in Calgary
Calgary is Canada's energy capital and the city with the second highest number of corporate head offices in the country. It is situated on the confluence of two rivers, has numerous walking and cycling trails, and is just an hour and a half from the international destination of Banff and the Rocky Mountains.

The University of Calgary
From the mid 1940's until 1966 the University of Calgary operated as an integral part of the University of Alberta. Courses in the first and second years of the engineering program were started during the 1957-58 and 1960 sessions. The faculty of engineering with a new four year curriculum was started in 1965. In 1966, the University of Calgary obtained its own charter and became an autonomous institution.

  • The University is located on a 213 hectare site in northwest Calgary with a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains to the west and an overview of the city of Calgary to the southeast.
  • The main campus features over 20 academic buildings as well as a modern students' centre, a museum and numerous cultural and athletic facilities.
  • The academic staff, which has been recruited internationally, numbers over 2,000.
  • The current enrolment is approximately 29,000 students including more than 3,800 graduate students.
  • At present, the University consists of 16 faculties, 53 academic departments, the Kananaskis Centre of Environmental Research, the Arctic Institute of North America, the Institute for Space Resaerch and the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE).

University of Calgary Graduate Students' Association
All graduate students are members of the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) at the University of Calgary. Some of the services offered by the GSA include assistance with academic appeals, health and dental plan administration, social events, sports leagues, volunteer opportunities, and workshops. All U of C students have full access to the health and recreation facilities, which include a 50m pool, climbing wall, fitness centre, running track, racquet centre and an outdoor centre. The Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Graduate Students' Association (CPEG) is the official body representing graduate students of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.
