Internships are designed to give you work integrated learning experience prior to graduation so you can bridge the gap between theory and practice and prepare you to excel in the workplace. You will gain practical experience in your field of study, earn money, develop industry contacts and networks and put your skills to the test outside the classroom.

Do I need to start repaying my student loans while on internship?

The University of Calgary considers all students registered in the Co-operative Education and Internship program as a “full-time student” for the purpose of student loans, Students’ Union fees and Student Health and Dental Insurance coverage.

 However, there are some changes to fees and services that do apply while you are on internship. Please continue reading to find out more about these changes.

Do I still have access to my U-PASS through the University?

Internship students need to “opt in” to the U-PASS, which requires contacting Enrolment Services and paying the accessed U-PASS fee.  Please contact Enrolment Services for additional information.

Do I still have my Campus Recreation pass?

No, you can opt back in to the pass. This is optional. For more information refer to Active Living website

What happens to my student Health and Dental coverage?

You can choose to opt out of the student health and dental play by calling Students Union Health and Dental Plan Office at 403-220-3906 or for more information refer to Gallivan & Associates website

Students must submit the “opt out” form and proof of alternative coverage.

Do I have to pay tuition and student fees?

Co-op/Internship Tuition Fees will apply for the first three work terms. Work Term 4 is free.

Students who register for University courses during their work term, will be assessed other course fees on a fee per course basis.

How does Internship affect my Taxes?

Please refer to this website or contact Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281 for information on your tax status.

Revenue Canada’s policy with regards to the Education Tax Amount considers Co-operative Education and Internship students not full or part time on the T22 02A form. Therefore, you will not qualify for the Education Tax amount.

Students on international placements are expected to file a Canadian income tax return. Canada Revenue Agency Web site form. When filling out your income tax form, please keep the following in mind:

  • You can claim full-time tuition and educational amounts for the months you were enrolled as a full-time student (you are only full-time during the months you are registered in three or more courses).
