Whether this is your first year or final year of studies at the Schulich School of Engineering, we want to help make your experience a success. This page includes information about the software engineering program and links to important information such as course outlines, requirements and schedules.

With the expansion of mobile computing, software engineers are in high demand to build software programs to analyze data and make it meaningful to businesses. As a software engineer, your work could also involve making the devices used in everything from computer games to banking systems more reliable.

What degree programs, minors and specializations are offered?

Degree Programs

Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering

Minors

Minor in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (MEED)
This joint program with the Haskayne School of Business helps students build entrepreneurial skills. They learn the principles and practices of developing new ventures and managing small and medium-sized companies.

Minor in Management and Society
This program teaches students about the role of management in our institutions and society. Engineering students learn how to practice managerial skills in a business environment.

Interdisciplinary specializations

Biomedical Engineering Specialization (BMES)
This unique, faculty-wide program integrates the study of complex living systems with engineering principles. Students learn how to apply these traditional principles and analysis to human health and medicine.

What is the program of study like?

After you complete all eight courses in the first-year common core, you choose a specific program of study.

In the software engineering program, you will learn about:

  • applied math
  • computer architecture
  • operating systems, computer networks, and databases
  • software analysis, design and implementation
  • applying engineering principles to build large scale software systems that are reliable, maintainable and deliver good performance
  • management strategies for ensuring the success of large software projects

In your final year, you can customize your program by selecting technical electives such as computer vision, biometrics, signal processing, biomedical engineering, telecommunications, virtual reality, computer graphics and web application development.
