Graduate Studies in Energy and Environment Engineering

Submitted by nnreimer.local on Mon, 03/24/2014 - 1:54pm

This innovative interdisciplinary specialization will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to explore and discover solutions to the environmental challenges facing Alberta, Canada and the world.

The energy and environment specialization is delivered through the Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE). About 25 faculty members from all five engineering departments, with a wide range of engineering and scientific backgrounds, supervise approximately 70 graduate students.

What degree programs are offered?

Doctor of Philosophy
Master of Science
Master of Engineering

All five engineering departments are involved in delivering this graduate program. Graduate students will enter one of five departments offering graduate degrees at the MEng, MSc and PhD level. The specialization is tailored for each student when he or she enters the program.

What are the program requirements?

The requirements for master's and doctoral degrees in the energy and environment program are listed in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar.

What are the admission requirements?

You can find admission criteria in the current Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar. Full application instructions are also included in the application package available from the department of proposed study.

These are the general guidelines for admission:

  • Applications will not be processed without the application fee.
  • Students require a BSc degree (in a basic engineering discipline or a related science field, such as chemistry, biology or geology).
  • Students must have a grade point average of 3.00 (based on a 4-point system) calculated for the last two years of undergraduate studies.
  • Applicants must include two sets of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. (These must be provided by all post-secondary institutions in a sealed envelope and sent with the application package to the department to which the student is applying.) Special conditions apply to transcripts and degree certificates that are in a language other than English.
  • Applicants must obtain two letters of reference (The reference letters must come from an academic source.)
  • Proof of proficiency in English is required for applicants whose native language is not English.
  • Students with a degree earned outside Canada must submit an ELP Form and Coversheet.

Note: Students without an engineering or science background should take several make-up courses in engineering such as Thermodynamics, Soil Mechanics or Fluid Mechanics.

How do I apply?

Applications for admission to the Energy and Environment Engineering Specialization are handled by each department in the faculty of engineering. Please contact the Graduate Program Administrator in the department that matches your academic background and/or industrial experience.

Open Studies

Professionals with a BSc in engineering or science are eligible to apply for courses offered by the Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE) as Open Studies students. To enroll, you must first apply for Open Studies status. For more information about the application process, please visit the Open Studies web page.

You must receive approval to take a course by completing an Open Studies registration form and getting it initialed by the course instructor. The form also has to be signed by the Director of CEERE before you go to the Registrar's office to register in the course.
