DR. TU had worked in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST, China), Aalborg University (Denmark), City University of Hong Kong, and University of Canterbury (New Zealand) before he joined University of Calgary. For the past years, he has been engaged in the following funded R&D (Research & Development) projects as a team member (TM), co-investigator (CI) or principal investigator (PI):

  • Design and build a computer controlled high-speed crankshaft grinding machine for an automobile manufacturing company (TM).
  • Design and build a three-axis laser-cutting machine (TM).
  • Design and build CNC machine tools (TM).
  • Automatic shop floor control in One-of-a-Kind Production (CI).
  • Automatic equipment diagnosis and integrated maintenance management systems for open-end spinning mills in a textile company, coal mill in a power generation company, and wafer back-grinding, wafer mounting, dicing saw, die attaching and epoxy curing equipment in an advanced electronics manufacturing company (PI).
  • Rapid product (plastic injection mould/tool and customized sheet metal forming product) development for world-class manufacturing (PI).
  • Trim-loss (or 2D stock cutting) minimisation in a garment manufacturing company (PI).
  • Research and development of a novel technology for building high-tech virtual enterprises (PI).
  • Adaptive production planning and scheduling for a One-of-a-Kind Production shop floor (PI).

Industrial Consulting Activities:

DR. TU has had extensive consulting and working experiences in various industries, such as automobile manufacturing, machine tool manufacturing, textile, power generation, shipbuilding, electronics manufacturing, injection mould/tool making, sheet metal manufacturing industries, and windows and doors manufacturer. His expertise is in the areas of manufacturing technologies, systems and management.

Professional Activities:

Senior Member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Member of Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ).
