Academic Mentors play an invaluable and necessary role in the Engineering Internship Program. By providing your expertise and advice to students, you help to further enrich their understanding of the relationship between classroom skills and workplace applications, while simultaneously getting the unique opportunity to keep in touch with industry. Academic Mentors are assigned by each engineering discipline’s department in an effort to match mentors with students working in a field the mentor understands and is comfortable with. The Engineering Internship Office intends for all mentors to have been assigned to a student before the intern begins their placement. This provides the mentor and student time to meet and build a mutual understanding of the mentor’s goals and expectations for the student. When the reports are completed, it is the student’s job to submit the reports to the Engineering Internship Office who will then pass them on to the designated mentor for grading. Any and all advice from mentors to students is welcomed and encouraged, however in the least the mentor must grade and return the reports to the office by the provided deadline.
Mentors are encouraged to take the initiative to participate in their student’s job site visits and if they feel it’s appropriate, nominate them for an internship award. If you have a student who you wish to visit their jobsite, please contact the Engineering Internship Office to make those arrangements. For more information on the awards offered, please see Internship Awards. Finally, we welcome any feedback including in regards to student concerns and report evaluations.
