University of Calgary

Message from the Department Head

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The department offers BSc, MSc, MEng, and PhD programs to over 500 undergraduate and 200 graduate students.

The department has 36 academics and 11 support staff. We are proud to be one of the most active research and innovation mechanical and manufacturing engineering departments in Canada with one University Professorship, two Canada Research Chairs, and two Alberta Heritage Scholars. Several colleagues are Fellows of learned societies and academies.

A number of faculty members in the department have won various teaching excellence awards such as APEGGA Education Excellence Award, University Student Union Teaching Excellence Awards and Faculty and Department Teaching Excellence Awards. Our education programs have won national and international awards such as the 2003 SME University LEAD Award, 2004 Alan Blizzard Award, and 2005 ASME Curriculum Innovation Award.

In 2005, the department attracted over $7.6 million research funding ($220,000/faculty). Several academic staff have provided strong leadership to multidisciplinary research and education initiatives in the areas of biomedical engineering, pipeline engineering and microsystems.

Faculty members in the department have been active in professional services with editorial appointments to professional journals, organizing and chairing conferences, and providing leadership to professional societies and organizations.

The City of Calgary, home of 1988 Winter Olympic Games, is the energy and engineering capital of Canada and is still one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. Banff and Lake Louise National Parks are located within easy distance and the quality of living in Calgary is among the highest in the world. If you are interested in studying within the department, please contact us.

Sincerely,
Ron J. Hugo, Ph.D., P.Eng.
