Helping engineering students launch careers

Sarah McGinnis

Searching for your first full-time job after university can feel daunting. With specialized leadership programs, internship opportunities and a vast array of student clubs and teams providing enhanced hands-on learning to our students, the Schulich School of Engineering is creating a solid foundation to help our graduates succeed in the workforce.

Career path proves daunting

Thirty-one per cent of Canadian university students reported that finding a career was traumatic or very difficult to handle in the past year according to the 2013 National College Health Assessment. “Students often worry that they aren’t doing enough and feel increased pressure to be involved in more and more in order to get a job after graduation,” said Marcy Crandle, an advisor with the Engineering Career Centre. “Frequently, they haven’t stepped back to take stock of everything they are doing and reflect on how all these pieces are adding up to form a foundation for their futures.”

Schulich looks to ease the stress

Recently, the Schulich School participated in a nation-wide career wellness campaign “It All Adds Up,” helping to address students’ stress about their careers. The Engineering Career Centre encouraged students to celebrate all of their hard work and reflect on the things they do inside and outside the classroom that their futures and careers. Fifty-five students visited a booth where they created a word cloud of their current activities and had their photos taken with it, and posted on Instagram with the hashtags: #italladdsup, #schulichengineer and #ucalgary. Participants highlighted their attendance at conferences, work with student clubs, home-building in Mexico, summer research, part-time jobs, tutoring and mentorship opportunities as some of the ways they are building their resumes while still in school. “We hope that by sharing the student photos on Instagram, other students will be inspired to reflect on and celebrate how what they are learning in their programs, their activities and the skills they are building, are all ‘adding up’ to their personal and career success,” said Crandle.

Industry partnerships lead to internships

Student internships are another key factor in helping graduates transition into their careers. Engineering students can take an optional paid internship after completing their third year of study. The 12- to-16 month placements give them critical work experience. Companies who partner with the Schulich School of Engineering for internships have the opportunity to get to know some of the engineering leaders of tomorrow, and can often recruit some of the best young minds to work for them after graduation. “We are dedicated to nurturing our students’ success. Our focus is on ensuring students have rich learning experiences – inside and outside of the classroom – that prepare them for a career where they can make a difference,” said Bill Rosehart, dean of the Schulich School of Engineering.

Chance for corporate to connect

Thanks to a partnership with the Global Petroleum Show, the Engineering Career Centre will be on hand at the annual exhibition at Stampede Park from June 13 to 15, 2017. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss with our advisors ways your company can engage with our students. If you would like to learn more about our internships – or are interested in speaking to an advisor about how your company can be part of some of our career education opportunities – please contact the Engineering Career Centre at ecc@ucalgary.ca or visit our website.
