Flow in Porous Media, Multi-phase Flow and Transport Processes, Hydrodynamic Instabilities, Physical Dynamics of Complex Fluids in Micro- and Macro-Geometries, Numerical Simulations and Mathematical Modelling with applications in oil recovery, chemical processes, environmental engineering and CO2 sequestration.
Our current research focuses on the Flow Dynamics of Complex Fluids such as polymers and fiber suspensions. These fluids that exhibit complex non-Newtonian behavior, have been the subjects of numerous studies due to their importance in many applications. However, in spite of their wide use, these materials and their flow properties are still not well understood. One of the objectives of our current research is the investigation of the coupling between the rheological properties and molecular structure of these fascinating fluids and the flow dynamics. It is in this perspective that two members of our research group are currently investigating the Effects Of Fiber Additives On The Vortex Dynamics Of Free Shear Flows, and modeling Hydrodynamic Interactions In Flows Of Fiber Suspensions. A related topic that has immediate application in the oil industry that we are currently studying focuses on understanding the Mechanisms Of Drag Reduction In Pipe Flows Using Polymer And Fiber Additives.
Our research group is also active in studying interfacial instabilities of Flow in Porous Media which are relevant to the oil industry. Topics of research in this field include the modeling of the Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids In Porous Media through numerical and experimental work, and studying the Viscous Fingering Instability At High Mobility Ratios. This last topic of research has immediate application in improving techniques for heavy-oil recovery.
Recently, we started new research studies in Micro-Fluidics to understand the fundamentals of transport phenomena of complex flows at the micro-scale level. These flows are widely encountered in micro-systems which are gaining wide use in many fields ranging from the life sciences to energy systems. Examples of applications of such systems include DNA analysis for genetic and genomics, controlled drug delivery, chemical analysis, flow sensors and control devices, environmental testing, and micro-systems for cooling electronic circuits. The emerging field of micro-fluidics offers exciting challenges and new opportunities for fundamental and applied research in the field of transport phenomena. This relatively new field of research presents several important and intriguing flow problems that have yet to be addressed by the scientific community. The long-term vision of this our research is to develop robust Flow Behavior Models For Miniaturized Fluidic Systems Of Non-Newtonian Fluids, and build numerical algorithms that allow understanding the Physical Dynamics Of Complex Flows In Micro-Scale Structures.
