Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow

With a growing demand for energy and a growing concern about safe and reliable energy sources, Schulich researchers are at the forefront of innovative research that is changing how we fuel our lives.

Not only are we developing less disruptive methods for extracting fossil fuels, and exploring methods to dramatically reduce emissions, we’re also furthering the development of renewable sources of energy.

Discovering New Sources

Research teams with active industrial collaborations are exploring conventional and unconventional energy resources from the Arctic to the deep biosphere to find more efficient extraction methods as well as finding new resources, such as gas hydrates. We’re making breakthroughs in renewable and alternative energy including solar energy conversion, fuel cells, and hydrogen and CO2 capture and storage.

Extract with Minimal Environmental Impacts

Researchers are studying game-changing extraction technologies to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. From improving SAGD and other in situ extraction methods to advancing hydraulic fracturing and upgrading, we’re applying innovations from a variety of fields while also furthering the science and engineering behind robust environmental monitoring of the oil sands.
