FIRST-YEAR COMMON CORE
The first-year program is common to all eight engineering degree programs and consists of eight courses in fundamental basic and engineering sciences, two hands-on engineering design courses and an optional course. To avoid time conflicts students will be registered in one complete course group.

Entering a Degree Program
At the end of first year, students apply for admission to a degree program. This is also a competitive process. The admission criteria include program preference as indicated by the student, number of courses completed during first year and the grade point average (GPA) achieved on all completed course work. Every attempt is made to admit students to one of their top five choices.

First-Year Success
We value our students and want to see them succeed; however, we recognize that first year can be quite a shock to many frosh students who find themselves ill prepared for the workload. To maximize the success of our first-year students, we monitor all fall session midterm grades for all first-year students. Any student who fails two or more midterm exams is invited to an intensive workshop covering study skills, exam writing skills, procrastination, the importance of sleep and other issues that contribute to academic success. This workshop is offered in the Schulich School by the Counselling Centre.
