ENGINEERS MAKE EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS
Download the BrochureThe Schulich Engineer combines technical strength with leadership and creativity in community and professional roles.
The Maier Student Leadership Program is a unique, powerful and timely means of preparing students to be society’s leaders of tomorrow. The first of its kind at any engineering school in Canada, it provides engineering students with the opportunity to accelerate their careers and realize their full leadership potential.
The power of the program lies in the combination of structured learning opportunities, individual leadership coaching and mentoring and real-world leadership experiences.
The Opportunity
Engineering students are involved in high-profile societies, teams and clubs that are international in scope and incur hundreds and thousands of dollars in annual expenditures. It is imperative that these groups be led by knowledgeable, skilled and capable leaders. The Maier Student Leadership Program provides a structured mechanism for accelerating the capabilities of students charged with the successful execution of this work. As advanced concepts in leadership are shared with the student leaders, they are perfectly positioned to internalize these concepts in a way that reflects their own leadership style within their areas of responsibility. When they graduate, a new generation of skilled leaders enters the workforce.
Program Participants
All engineering students in the Schulich School of Engineering are welcome to take part. The program is delivered in a progressive manner so that students demonstrating the most interest and commitment in leadership receive the greatest opportunity and support.
Program Components
Tier One: Leadership Lunch and Learn Sessions
All students at the Schulich School are eligible to register in these sessions, designed to provide basic leadership awareness and skills. Specific “soft skills” are presented and explored in a highly interactive and participative environment, with industry and community mentors.
Tier Two: Leadership Conferences
The second tier of the program is offered to Schulich Scholars and any student leader who has been elected or volunteers to act in a leadership capacity on a board, major project team, student society or sanctioned club. This group is invited to attend each fall and spring, a one-day conference on basic management processes and leadership concepts, with a focus on creating an environment of collaboration and cooperation. In addition, the services of a Leadership Coach in Residence is available to these individuals.
Tier Three: Leadership Coaching/Mentoring Program
Given their level of commitment, potential influence and significant public profile, selected leaders are enrolled in a coaching and mentoring program that provides personal structure and support for their individual development.
Tier Four: Student Presidents Round Table
Engineering student society presidents not only represent the student body, they are accountable for the initiation and delivery of numerous high-profile activities throughout the year. This element of the program helps them form a strong and interdependent working relationship through monthly off-site dinner meetings, where they can exchange ideas, express concerns and share experiences with one another under the guidance and direction of the Director of Students and a professional coach.
Benefits
Participants become better engineers. Students participating in this program receive an enriched educational experience by complementing their curriculum-based technical knowledge with experiential learning of leadership skills.
