Research activities

Solar energy harvesting systems

Dr. Pahlevani is working on solar nergy harvesting systems. In particular, his main research interests include the power electronics technology required for solar energy conversion and semiconductor level structures of photovoltaic cells

Micro-grids

At the University of Calgary, Dr. Pahlevani created a hybrid micro-grid that can integrate various renewable energy sources and energy storage systems into the power system very efficiently. The proposed hybrid micro-grid includes ±190V DC distribution as well as 240V split-phase AC distribution. The main contributions have been related to the development of advanced nonlinear control systems and digital signal processing techniques for power electronic converters, which are able to provide reliable and robust power flow control within the hybrid micro-grid and between the hybrid micro-grid and the power system. The proposed hybrid micro-grid offers smart-grid capabilities for future distributed generation. 

Nonlinear differential geometric control

Dr. Pahlevani introduced the application of differential geometry to control systems of power converters. In the proposed design methodology, the system manifolds on which the trajectory of the system is steered are quantized based on the converter configuration at any time instant. These manifolds are defined as quasi steady-state manifolds, which are quantized and represent the cyclic behavior of the state variables. In between the quasi steady-state manifolds, boundary layer manifolds are defined, which link the quasi steady-state manifolds. By using the quasi steady-state manifolds and boundary layer manifolds, the behavior of the power converter is fully characterized. Thus, the control system and signal processing techniques that are designed on these manifolds can achieve maximal performance and steer the system along the desired trajectory.


Biography

Majid Pahlevani received the BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran, and the PhD degree from Queens University, Kingston, Canada. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Calgary. 

He was a Research Associate with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University, Canada as well as the chief R&D engineer at SPARQ Systems Inc, in Kingston, Ontario Canada, from 2012 to 2016. He also worked as a technical designer in the Information and Communication Technology Institute (ICTI) at Isfahan University of Technology from 2003 to 2007, where he was involved in design and implementation of high quality resonant converters. He collaborated with Freescale Semiconductor Inc. where he was the leader of a research team working on the design and implementation of the power converters for a pure electric vehicle from 2008 to 2012. He is the author of more than 100 journal and conference proceeding papers and the holder of 30 U.S. patents (issued/pending). His current research interests include the application of differential geometry in power electronics, robust and nonlinear control, advanced soft-switching methods in power converters, plug-in pure electric vehicles, and micro-grids.

Dr. Pahlevani is an Associate Editor of IEEE TRansactions on Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, anad a member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and Industrial Electronics Society. He is the recipient of "Early Researcher Excellence Award", "Teaching Achievement Award", and "Research Achievement Award" from the University of Calgary. He is also the recipient of the "Engineering and Applied Sciences Outstanding Thesis" award from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, "Research Excellence Award" from IEEE Canada, and "Distinguished Graduate Student Award" from Isfahan University of Technology.
