Biography

Mozhdeh Shahbazi (PhD, PEng) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geomatics Engineering, the University of Calgary since 2016. She is also adjunct member to the graduate program in Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University. She is also secretory of Working Group II, TCI at ISPRS and Director in the Executive Board of Canadian Remote Sensing Society. She received her BSc degree in civil/survey engineering in 2009, her MSc degree in geomatics/photogrammetry engineering in 2011, and her Ph.D. in applied geomatics in 2016. 

Her current research areas include: Development, integration and calibration of ranging and imaging technologies for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous mapping via vision-guided unmanned aerial systems. In particular, her research activities are focused on i) developing novel technologies to improve precision and intelligence of navigation & autonomy of data acquisition with UAVs in confined spaces; ii) applying advanced image analytics to raise the level of accuracy, completeness, and interpretability of the 3D information gathered by unmanned aerial systems. The focus of the technologies developed in her lab is on high-precision mapping in three critical contexts: 1) surveying and metric inspection of urban infrastructures such as telecom towers, buildings, power lines and railways; 2) monitoring open-pit and underground mining sites; and 3) smart farming and precision agriculture.
