FIG makes Mike Barry an Honorary Member

The Federation Internationale des Geometres (FIG) General Assembly made Dr. Michael Barry an Honorary Member in June 2021. Mike has been the Canada representative on FIG Commission 7 Cadastre and Land Management since 2006 and on the Board of Directors of the FIG Foundation since 2005. Mike’s major contribution has been in establishing research grants for emerging academics in surveying/geomatics programmes in developing countries and for scholarships for PhD students in these countries. He noted “A significant proportion of FIG’s publications deal with land matters in developing countries. Yet, people who actually live and do research in those countries write a small proportion of the material. There’s no point in attracting potential academics from these countries to do PhDs in Europe and North America, and then when they return to their home countries there are minimal or no funds to do important research and they cannot compete for PhD students who are lured by better funding elsewhere.”
