Biography

Dr. Kangsoo Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, and the Director of the Human-X Interaction (HXI) Lab. Dr. Kim is an expert in human interaction with computers, focusing particularly on how people engage with immersive eXtended Reality (XR) technologies such as Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (VR/AR/MR). He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electronics and Computer Engineering from Hanyang University in South Korea and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Before joining Schulich, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab at the University of Delaware and the Synthetic Reality Lab (SREAL) at UCF, with an additional appointment in the College of Nursing at UCF.

Research

Areas of Research

Human–Computer Interaction, Metaverse, eXtended Reality (Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality), Perception and Cognition, Virtual Avatars/Agents

Dr. Kim's research integrates both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, extending into inter- and trans-disciplinary domains such as psychology and engineering. He develops interactive VR/AR prototypes to investigate human perception and behavior in virtual environments, focusing on interactions with embodied figures. His work considers various social settings, such as educational, collaborative, and training scenarios, where realistic social interactions are crucial. Through user studies and participant interviews, he collects data on user experiences and communication quality, while also analyzing verbal and nonverbal behaviors, interpersonal distance, and the treatment of virtual entities. Applications of XR technology in his research include educational tools like virtual tutors, tourism aids providing site information, augmented human abilities such as extended touch or vision, and digital healthcare interactions with virtual patient care assistants. Additionally, Dr. Kim is involved in developing metaverse environments that facilitate both physical and virtual interactions incorporating digital twins.

Having earned multiple Best Paper Awards, his research has been published in top-tier conferences and journals, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR), IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (IEEE VR), and ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST), where he served as an Organizing Chair and a Program Committee member. He is also currently an Associate Editor for Presence: Virtual and Augmented Reality and a Review Editor for Frontiers in Virtual Reality.

He actively welcomes students to join his pioneering inter- and trans-disciplinary research. For more information, please check the HXI Lab website (https://www.hxi-lab.ca).
