Transportation systems across Canada are facing increasing challenges associated with global climate change, and as a result these systems need to be able to adapt to extreme weather events. Because of Canada’s unique geography, Canada’s transportation systems are susceptible to extreme weather events. This collaborative project between the University of Calgary, the NRC and City of Calgary has the goal of developing AI methods and software that can be used to predict traffic and transport-related logistic issues in extreme weather conditions and to recommend optimal re-routing options. The project can help develop an AI-based solution to improve traffic flow, reduce travel distances and costs, and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the inefficient transport of goods.
