How Cybermentor works
Cybermentor matches girls in grades 6 to 12 with female mentors. Weekly online chats reinforce girls’ interests in science and engineering.
During the school year, from September to June, students:
- Chat weekly with their mentors
- Learn about STEM careers
- Get help with homework and projects
- Attend hands-on workshops
- Gain new interests, skills and friends
- Get links to resources and relevant events

Go ENG Girl at UCalgary
Every Spring, young women in grades 7 to 10 come to campus to meet female engineering professors, professionals and students. They learn about engineering education, research and careers. They try their hand at engineering activities. They take part in interactive engineering design competitions. They enjoy engineering demonstrations by students. And, they hear a panel of successful female engineers. Their parents attend info sessions on engineering education.

The number of women studying engineering has increased in recent years. But, they are still underrepresented in the profession. Go ENG Girl encourages girls to explore their interests in science and technology. They also see, first-hand, that women can have exciting careers in engineering.
Explore STEM at UCalgary
This city-wide conference is for girls in Grade 9. Every year, about 800 students visit the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). The goal of Explore STEM is to reach girls as they enter high school. This is when they are making critical curriculum choices that impact their futures. By encouraging girls to pursue their passion for math and science, doors to exciting career options remain open. Of the 800 yearly registrants, more than 30 per cent visit UCalgary to experience:
- Engineering design challenges
- Robotics
- Electronics
- Virtual reality technologies
- Biomedical engineering
- The nature of light
- Software prototyping

During Women in Engineering Day, about 300 young women in grades 10 and 11 visit UCalgary.
They explore Schulich's labs and meet student mentors. They engage in a fun engineering design challenge. And, they enjoy a panel of successful female engineering alumni, and learn about the amazing careers available to women in this field.
Not only do they find out more about the diverse array of engineering disciplines they can choose from, they get a "day-in-the-life" experience of what studying engineering with us would be like.
