Navigating your degree
Course registration in first year is completed by Schulich staff based on your answers in the Block Registration Form. For 2nd-year and beyond course registration, it is first-come, first-served. Register in classes as soon as your Enrolment start time opens to access seats reserved for your major.

Advising and Course Registration
After completing a year of common core courses that expose first-year students to various areas of engineering. We do our best to ensure that everyone gets their first choice. In situations where students have not completed prerequisites they may need to complete a second year of common core courses. Students interested in taking a minor can rank their preference when they select their major. Minors are competitive based on GPA.
Registration opens early in March for Fall/Winter and February for Spring/Summer, and is first-come, first-served, based on your enrolment appointment. Your enrollment start time will appear in your Student Centre a few weeks before registration begins.
Engineering departments reserves seats required courses in their degree program. These reserve seats are released to other students after a certain date. After the reserve date is lifted, you will no longer have priority and anyone can register in the course first-come, first-serve.
Important: Before registering, you can build out your schedule by adding courses to your shopping cart. We recommend that you validate your cart prior to registration day to ensure that the schedule you have built, works. Register as soon as your appointment opens to make the most of reserved seats for your program. We recommend registering by May 15 for both fall and winter.

Common registration issues
Time conflicts, reserved seats, missing prerequisites, or waitlists can happen. View information about common registration errors or connect with an advisor for help.
Course load
15 units (typically 5 courses) per term. You can take up to 18 units per semester however, students with a heavier load may discover this affects their academic performance. Full-time status is 9+ units in Fall/Winter and 6+ units in Spring/Summer. Most courses are 3-units.
Incoming Exchange Student Registration
Welcome to UCalgary! After you’ve been admitted, here’s what to do next:
- Submit the Exchange Course Form to let us know which Engineering courses you’d like to take.
Need help with registration? Connect with an academic advisor in person or virtually. If you have a quick question, you can email engginfo@ucalgary.ca. They’re here to guide you through the process.
If you’ve already completed the lab portion of a course at UCalgary with 75% or higher within the past two years, you may not need to repeat the lab component. A lab exemption allows you to register in the section of the course that does not include the lab.
Submit the Lab Exemption Form by the Friday before the add/drop deadline. If approved, you’ll receive an email with next steps for enrollment.
- First repeat: Register as usual—no extra steps.
- Second repeat (third attempt): You’ll need permission before the term starts. Third attempts are considered for students who require a course for progression in their current program. Third attempts are final attempts at the course. Learn more.

- Fall 2026: August 28, 2026
- Winter 2027: January 7, 2027
Requests submitted after the start of classes for the same term will not be approved.
All prerequisites for courses offered by the Schulich School of Engineering must be met with a minimum grade of "C-." Minimum grades in prerequisite courses are required to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in more advanced courses. In exceptional cases, if students can demonstrate that they have equivalent knowledge to the prerequisite(s) listed, they may seek consent to enroll with a request for a prerequisite waiver.
In addition to demonstrating equivalent knowledge, students seeking prerequisite waivers must be
(1) in good standing (i.e., not on probation or in the Academic Turnaround Program) AND
(2) have completed a minimum of 18 units.
This form is for undergraduate engineering students and engineering courses only.

If you need to reduce your courseload from full-time to less than 3 courses per term, please submit the SSE Part-Time Request Form and advisor will reach out once your request has been received.

Course Interruptions & Withdrawal
Learn more about supports available when course interruptions occur.
Students in the faculty of engineering must have sought approval from the Engineering Student Centre for course withdrawal. Students can withdraw from up to 30 units total during their degree. Here’s what you need to know about course withdrawals:
- Before the drop deadline: You can drop the course with no record on your transcript and will receive a tuition refund.
- After the drop deadline: You can withdraw, but a “W” will appear on your transcript and tuition will not be refunded.

You’re allowed one withdrawal per course. If you need to withdraw from the same course a second time, you’ll need to meet with an advisor before the withdrawal deadline. Plan ahead; you won’t be the only student looking to withdraw.
If unexpected, uncontrollable circumstances affect your academic performance, you may request an EW through the Office of the Registrar. Learn more about EW.
If you need take a leave of absence from your studies in Schulich you need to submit the SSE Time-off Request Form
Undergraduate students who stop-out (do not register in University of Calgary courses) will be able to return to their studies within a 12-month period. Students can register in courses through their Student Centre.
Students who stop-out for a 12-month period or more, will be required to apply for admission. See section A.4 General Admission Procedures. Under exceptional circumstances, a Faculty may approve a leave of absence beyond 12 months. Students must obtain approval from their Faculty before the 12-month period has lapsed. The Faculty will add a comment to the student information system indicating the approval, with the date of return, and provide a written confirmation to the student. Learn more.
International Students must meet with International Student Services (ISS) to fully understand the possible impacts a leave of absence can have on your immigration status before being approved for a leave. ISS will put a note on your file and after you meet with them you can submit a Leave of Absence Form.

Planning your degree program
Program planning helps students understand the recommended sequence of courses to complete their program efficiently and meet all graduation requirements. Proper sequencing matters because many courses have prerequisites and build on skills developed in earlier classes.

Change of Program
- If you’re ready to switch majors, submit a Change of Program Request through your Student Centre
- Application window: October 1 – February 1 for admission in the following Fall term
- For change of program competitive averages, see transfer admission requirements on the Future Students webpages (select University Transfer Student)
- Fewer than 12 units completed → assessed using high school grades
- 12+ units completed → must meet transfer GPA (based on most recent 30 units)
Dropping a minor
- Students wishing to drop a minor need to review the course map for their major and meet with an advisor to discuss next steps.
Want to take a course elsewhere and count it toward your UCalgary degree? Here’s how:
- Request a Letter of Permission (LOP) before registering—no retroactive approvals. You must be in good academic standing and have completed at least 18 units at UCalgary. Up to 45 units can transfer into your degree, with no more than 24 units in your major.
- International students: Connect with International Student Services before applying.
It is important to note that attending another institution without a Letter of Permission is grounds for dismissal from the University of Calgary.

- Tip: Plan ahead! Processing can take time, especially near graduation. Make sure all transfer credit is posted before graduation deadlines. Avoid taking an LOP in winter of your last semester

Study Abroad
Planning to study in another country? You can earn credit toward your UCalgary degree while exploring the world!
- Apply via the Study Abroad website.
- Once accepted, meet with an engineering advisor to confirm your courses will transfer back to your degree. You’ll need detailed and translated course outlines for assessment.
- Plan ahead—course equivalency assessments can take several weeks, especially during busy times.
- Optional courses usually transfer more easily than technical courses, so keep that in mind when choosing classes.
- The maximum transfer credit allowed in your degree is 60 units (including any Letter of Permission courses).
