Engineering Class of 2023

5 quick questions

I wanted to become an engineer as there are many possibilities of innovation and application found in this field. Depending on what one may be passionate about, they specialize in engineering accordingly. Not only this, but as someone with an interest in entrepreneurship, engineering seemed to fit very well with it.

The one challenge I faced was being told that girls do not go into engineering. This made me second-guess my decision to go into engineering. However, understanding that I need to set myself part from my peers helped me overcome this obstacle.

Advice I have for young women considering engineering as a program of study is to not be afraid to try something new. Engineering is a broad field, and encompasses many different applications and skills. Being open to new ideas and learnings will help you become a better and more well-rounded engineer.

There are many supports/initiatives available at Schulich, such as the new program, Ask An Upper Year, FROSH week, and diversity conferences and networking events hosted by ESS. And, there is much more coming!

Meeting people of various backgrounds, cultures and upbringings is something I enjoy about engineering. You get to work alongside peers/co-workers who bring their own experiences to the table, which helps with the final product!
