Building our Indigenous student community is an important part of diversity at Schulich
Partners in outreach
Schulich and its partners are encouraging Indigenous students to consider careers in engineering. We host the Power to Choose summer camp for Indigenous youth. The sponsor of this program is the Alberta Women's Science Network. We also partner with Indigenous Engineering Inclusion Inc., Indspire, and the Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology. We visit Indigenous learning communities around Alberta to promote engineering. We host special Indigenous student events on campus. And, we liaise with the campus Native Centre to support student success.
We welcomed our very first Indigenous Engineer-in-Residence Deanna Burgart (centre). A self-proclaimed ‘Indigeneer,’ Deanna has dedicated her career to combining engineering principles with an Indigenous respect for Mother Earth. She will spend the next year working with us to expand our connections between engineering and Indigenous wisdom.
Indigenous student success
Engineering Student Center
Our Engineering Student Centre provides Indigenous student support. We help with successful navigation of university systems. A dedicated employee supports Indigenous student course selection, registration and more.
Engineering Academic Support Centre
Indigenous students are also supported through our Engineering Academic Success Centre. There, students have one-on-one help developing their academic skills.
ii' taa' poh' to' p
In 2018, the University of Calgary released its indigenous strategy. Together in a Good Way: A Journey of Transformation and Renewal was bestowed the Blackfoot name ii’ taa’ poh’ to’ p (a place to rejuvenate and re-energize during a journey).
