Considering an internship?

Submitted by lisa.jeannet on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 8:54am

Internships are designed to give you work integrated learning experience prior to graduation  so you can bridge the gap between theory and practice and  prepare you  to excel in the workplace. You will gain practical experience in your field of study, earn money, develop industry contacts and networks and put your skills to the test outside the classroom.

Why should I go on internship?

Our paid internship program is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable work integrated learning experience, to earn money for your studies and to make connections with industry that will be helpful when you launch your career.

It can also be an exciting chance to see the world, with numerous national and international internship opportunities available in addition to our internships here in Calgary.

The 12 to 16-month program gives you more extensive work experience than many other engineering schools, helping you stand out from the crowd when you are ready to take the next step in your career.

Who qualifies?

You must have completed all courses required for the first three years of your engineering degree to participate in the internship program.

You must be registered as an undergraduate full-time student and be in good academic standing – with a GPA of at least 2.0 during the past academic year.

You must also return to the Schulich School of Engineering as a full-time student after completing your internship for a minimum of one full-time semester.

Those who do not meet the above requirements may still apply and will be assessed on an individual basis.

When can I apply?

The application process begins in September of your third year of studies, which is typically 8 to 12 months before your work term begins.

How do I apply?

Visit the Engineering Career Centre website to access CareerLink, the program used to submit applications and to search for internship job postings.

How do I decide where to work?

Securing an internship is designed to give you a real-life experience of finding a full-time job. You can check job postings, apply for positions that interest you and, if selected, interview for the job. You can also search independently for positions, not all employers choose to post on our website and we encourage students to take an active role in securing a position.

Once an employer has  offered you  an internship and you have accepted their offer, please notify the internship office engineer@ucalgary.ca and your start date and internship can be set up.

We have internship opportunities across Alberta, nationally and internationally.
