Jianyixian (Jian) Zhu, BSc (Eng)'20
Jian is a Master of Science in Civil Engineering student here at UCalgary, and has two successful internships and a scholarship from McElhanney under her belt. She developed a keen interest in masonry structures as an undergrad and joined Dr. Nigel Shrive's research group with the help of a Canadian Standards Association Graduate Scholarship
Bita Malekian, BSc (Eng)'18
After graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 2018 and landing a job at an energy company, Bita joined Calgary Professional Chapter of Engineers without Borders. While conducting a series of lunch-and-learn programs with leading water professionals and academics, she became aware of a theme: operational issues at water facilities. Leading her to found Water Movement with a goal to create a positive impact on the inner workings of Calgary’s water system, with a ripple effect on education and community awareness.
Amanda Calleberg, BSc (Eng)’19
Former president of the UCalgary Petroleum and Energy Society and former leader of Canada’s only Drillbotics team, which annually designs and builds a small-scale automated drilling rig for a global competition, Amanda has interned at ConocoPhillips Canada, Cenovus Energy and Husky Energy, and has authored multiple publications. She has also conducted university research, simulating methane combustion in porous media and modeling downhole drilling parameters.
Jiani Deng, BSc (Eng)’19
Former ESS president Jiani Deng is now working as a facilities field engineer on the Keystone XL Project. Jiani graduated from chemical engineering with a specialization in energy and environment. She was a 2014 Schulich Scholar and recipient of the 2019 APEGA Ivan Finlay Leadership Award. She started her career as a field engineer with Schlumberger in pressure pumping services.
