Research partners

Currently, I am not looking for graduate students to supervise. Please contact my colleagues if you wish to enquire about graduate studies opportunities.

Learning opportunities

As an assistant professor (teaching), I am looking to expand my knowledge of Engineering Education practices in the areas of student motivation, multi-marker grading, and psychometric assessments.

Funding

I am interested in funding opportunities that support my areas of engineering education research areas: increasing transparency in grading and granting student access to psychometric assessments.

Background

Educational Background

Masters of Engineering Civil Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, 2018

Certificate in University Teaching and Learning, Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, 2020

Biography

Jacob grew up in Fife, Scotland and attended Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. In Scotland, Jacob worked in brownfield oil and gas structural engineering before moving to bridge inspection for the Scottish truck road network. In Canada, Jacob has worked as a consultant for Associated Engineering and the Transition Accelerator working on all-season access road planning and active transportation plans for the former, and creating alternative fuel fleet transition plans for the latter. Jacob's PhD work continued an interest in asset management and transportation as it combines advances in contiuum approximation modelling for autonomous last mile goods delivery with Geographic Information Systems. He has taught at the University of Calgary since 2019, delivering both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Research

Areas of Research

Effectiveness of Team and Individual Psychometric Frameworks

Building on implementations of the Individual Team Performance Lab (ITP) and Strength-Based Campus tools in the engineering design course, I am interested in expanding self-awareness education in this and other engineering classrooms. I look to apply scholarship of teaching and learning principles to assess the effectiveness of these and other psychometric tools on increasing students' team working skills and satisfaction.

Workload Perceptions between Students and Professors

Excessive workload is a common complaint for students in engineering programs worldwide. Although developing time management skills is an important aspect of tertiary education, consistently excessive workload is known to impact student well-being and learning capacity. This research supporting Prof. Pereira aims to better understand these impacts and provide recommendation to the Schulich School of Engineering on course planning and perspective alignment best practises.
