2020 Killam Awards celebrate outstanding faculty, postdoctoral scholars and doctoral students — and you can join the party

University community is invited to join this year’s online Killam Awards event Oct. 15

Each October, the University of Calgary honours the Killam Scholars and Laureates, a group comprised of some of our most outstanding faculty, postdoctoral scholars and doctoral students. This year, the university will celebrate the Killams with an online event Oct. 15.

The Killams comprise several awards supported by the Killam Trusts established by Dorothy J. Killam in honour of her late husband, Izaak Walton Killam. The trusts were established to develop and expand the work of Canadian universities; since the University of Calgary became independent from the University of Alberta in 1966, it has been one of a select group of five Canadian universities supported by the trusts. As such, the Killams are among the most prestigious awards available to UCalgary researchers.

“The Killam awards play a vital role in the university’s research activities,” according to Dr. William Ghali, vice-president (research). “The Killam Trusts are at the heart of the University of Calgary’s drive to find transformative solutions to major scientific and societal challenges, and provide key support to scholars across an extraordinary range of disciplines. It’s an honour and privilege to be one of Canada’s Killam universities, and to have the merit, calibre and creativity of our scholars celebrated.”

The Killam awards are given out across the following categories:

  • McCaig-Killam Teaching Award
  • Killam Graduate Supervision Award
  • Killam Award in Undergraduate Mentorship
  • Killam Emerging Research Leader Award
  • Killam Research Excellence Award
  • Killam Annual Professors
  • Killam Visiting Scholars
  • Killam Memorial Chair
  • Killam Pre-Doctoral Laureates (PhD students)
  • Killam Post-Doctoral Laureates
  • Donald N Byers Memorial Killam Prize for Best Statement of Program of Studies and Research

This year’s celebration will be held as a safe, virtual event. Moving the event online allows the university to extend participation to the greater university community for the first time. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to join the celebration of this community of remarkable scholars, and to learn more about the legacy of the Killam Trusts at the University of Calgary.
