Dr. Lindsay Crowshoe, MD, appointed as the first Assistant Dean, Indigenous at the Cumming School of Medicine

A message from Associate Dean, Dr. Dianne Mosher, Indigenous, Local and Global Health Office

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lindsay Crowshoe as Assistant Dean, Indigenous within the Indigenous, Local and Global Health Office for a five-year term effective January 1, 2021. The Assistant Dean will lead efforts to support the Cumming School of Medicine’s (CSM) strategic priorities and goals to advance Indigenous health; foster critical inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and knowledge; enhance outreach and engagement with Indigenous communities; and promote excellence in Indigenous health research.

Dr. Crowshoe is a Piikani First Nation family physician-scholar with extensive experience leading large multi-disciplinary provincial, national, and international research teams focusing on chronic disease and social equity within areas of primary health care, public health, and health education. He is successful in bridging multiple disciplines of knowledge including health, clinical, social sciences, professional health education and Indigenous Ways of Knowing. He has developed innovative Indigenous health education initiatives as well as medical student recruitment, admissions policies and processes for his local institution. He provides input nationally, contributing to numerous policy directives and resources for medical schools across Canada.

His work is guided by equity, social justice, Indigenous ethics and principles inherent within Truth and Reconciliation. He co-authored the Report on Indigenous Health Dialogue of Truth and Reconciliation within the CSM which was released in 2020. Through an extensive community engagement process, the report identified critical gaps and strategic directions for mobilizing the CSM.

In 2020, Dr. Crowshoe was awarded the Royal College’s Dr. Thomas Dignan Indigenous Health award which recognizes a person’s dedication to advocating for Indigenous People’s rights and justice while drawing attention to institutionalized racism and working to dismantle it.

The experience and leadership brought by Dr. Crowshoe will be essential in advancing Indigenous health within the CSM. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Crowshoe on his appointment.
