Schulich’s Women in Engineering Day sets new attendance record

It was a day of inspiration with a record-setting number of high school students gathering at the University of Calgary for Women in Engineering Day 2024.

The Schulich School of Engineering once again played host to the annual event on Feb. 22, which is offered to Calgary and area students in grades 10 and 11 who have a passion for science, math and engineering.

“Engineers design solutions for problems,” Dr. Emily Marasco, BSc (Eng)’11, MSc’13, PhD’18, told the more than 300 students and teachers in attendance at the opening presentation.

They also heard from Schulich alum Avery Foret, BSc (Eng)'20, who provided insight into her engineering journey which included graduating with a bachelor's degree with distinction in mechanical engineering.

“I really liked her speech – it was very inspiring,” one student said. “I also really enjoyed speaking with current students about their experiences, since I can picture myself pursuing this program.”

After the speeches, the students took part in a full day of activities and design challenges, and learned more about Schulich’s departments, programs, teams and clubs.

“It was a wonderful experience,” another student said. “I loved talking with experienced individuals and working with my peers to complete fun activities.” 

Given the record turnout, organizers say they are looking at potentially hosting another women in STEM-related event in the spring before planning begins for next year’s Women in Engineering Day.
